AVYÁJA Program

We begin with an offering where movement becomes prayer and rhythm becomes devotion. Each step invokes not only the divine, but the timeless stories that continue to shape us. The Sutradhari enters as the thread-bearer, guiding us across worlds between memory and meaning, past and present. Through this presence, the stage transforms into a sacred space, inviting us to witness not just events, but the questions they awaken within us.

❋ Nrithyanjali & Sutradhari

Before destiny claimed her, she was Princess Kunti, standing at the threshold of innocence and awakening. Gifted with a boon she scarcely understood, she encounters forces far greater than her years. In curiosity and wonder, she invokes the divine, unaware of the lifelong consequences that will follow. In that single moment, choice and fate intertwine, setting into motion a journey that will test her strength, her silence, and her resilience.

❋ Scene 1 - Princess Kunti

As Kunti steps into her role as queen, her marriage to Pandu marks not just a union, but the beginning of a life shaped by duty and adaptation. She accepts Madri, her co-wife, not as a rival, but as part of a shared destiny, choosing harmony over division. When fate turns and Pandu is bound by a curse that reshapes their lives, Kunti rises as the anchor of the family. And when Madri chooses to follow Pandu in the ritual of Sati, Kunti embraces not only her own children, but Madri’s as well, raising them with equal love and without distinction. In her, motherhood transcends blood, becoming an act of strength, sacrifice, and unwavering compassion.

❋ Scene 2 - Kunti

Gandhari’s marriage is not born of choice, but of responsibility to protect her kingdom and secure its future. Unaware that she is to wed Dhritarashtra, a blind king, she enters the alliance with trust, only to be confronted by a truth that reshapes her life. In response, she chooses to blindfold herself, not in submission, but in a profound act of solidarity and resolve. Through this choice, Gandhari accepts her fate fully, redefining strength as restraint and devotion as power. Yet within her silence lives a complex world of love for her family, loyalty to her husband, and the quiet weight of decisions made without full knowing.

❋ Scene 3: Gandhari

Together, the Pandavas and Kunti form a bond forged through trials, exile, and shared purpose. Under Kunti’s guidance, they learn to uphold dharma even when the world around them challenges its meaning. Their unity becomes their strength, carrying them through hardship and uncertainty. Yet beneath this resilience lies the growing tension of a destiny that will soon demand not just courage, but sacrifice.

❋ Scene 4: Pandavas & Kunti

What begins as a game unfolds into one of the most defining moments of the epic. The royal court gathers, and though unease lingers, the game is allowed to proceed. Elders such as Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura stand witness, aware of the unfolding injustice, yet bound by silence. As the stakes rise, so too does the weight of their inaction.
When Draupadi is humiliated and her dignity threatened, the silence becomes louder than any protest. This is not merely a failure of one man, but of many, where knowledge does not translate into action and righteousness falters in the face of power. In this moment, the question lingers: is silence neutrality, or complicity?

❋ Scene 5: The Dice Game

The echoes of that silence culminate in the inevitability of war. What was once confined to a court now engulfs kingdoms, turning relationships into rivalries and ideals into weapons. This is not merely a battle of armies, but of accumulated choices, each one leading to this irreversible moment. In the chaos of war, victory and loss blur, leaving behind only the echoes of what has been sacrificed.

❋ Scene 6: War

Bhanumathi stands as a quiet yet profound presence in Duryodhana’s life. She is not defined by the chaos around her, but by the steadiness she brings within it. As his beloved, she is his calm in every storm, consistent, understanding, and free of judgment. In her presence, he is not a king burdened by ambition, but a man seen and accepted.
Through Bhanumathi, we glimpse a different dimension of Duryodhana, not as a figure of conflict, but as someone capable of love, vulnerability, and connection. Her strength lies in unwavering support, offering balance to the turbulence that surrounds them both.

❋ Scene 7: Bhanumathi

After the war, what remains is silence filled with grief. Four women stand in its aftermath, Kunti, Gandhari, Draupadi, and Bhanumathi, each carrying a different kind of loss.
Kunti mourns not only the sons she has lost, but the truths she withheld and the burdens her choices placed upon her children. Gandhari grieves the fall of her sons, but also the consequences of a lifetime of restraint, loyalty, and silence. Bhanumathi mourns the man she loved, not for his role in the war, but for the life they shared and the future that will never be.
And yet, amidst grief, Draupadi stands tall, victorious, not in pride, but in the knowledge that justice has finally been served. Her journey, marked by humiliation and resilience, finds its resolution in the restoration of dignity.
Their grief is not singular. It is shaped by love, memory, regret, and the echoes of choices that led them here.

Who are we to judge whether their choices were right or wrong? All we can do is reflect, learn, and carry forward the lessons within their actions and their inaction. Isn’t that what our scriptures are meant for, to guide us, to question us, and to help us evolve?

❋ Scene 8: Lament & Reflections

Even as we witness the fall of Duryodhana, this moment turns toward Bhanumathi, not in sorrow alone, but in strength. She stands as a woman who, even in knowing the fate that awaited her husband, chose to steady him, support him, and prepare him for the path he believed in.
Through rhythm and movement, her resilience unfolds, measured, deliberate, and unwavering. It becomes a tribute to the strength it takes to stand beside someone in their final battle and to let them go with dignity. In her final act, as she joins her husband in Sati, it becomes not just an ending, but a continuation of devotion and choice.

❋ Scene 9: Bhanumathi Jathi

The Thillana brings the production to a vibrant and uplifting close. After a journey through conflict, reflection, and emotional depth, it restores rhythm, movement, and joy to the stage. It reminds us that even after profound loss, life continues forward, carrying the lessons of the past. In its energy and brilliance, it becomes both a celebration and a renewal.
